Contrary to this obituary, which was printed in numerous newspapers across the country, Callan's Medal of Honor citation said he volunteered and succeeded in obtaining water for the wounded of the command, and he also displayed conspicuously good conduct in assistlng to drive away the Indians. In other words, he was one of the water carriers during the hilltop fight.
